Piece by Piece – An Exploration in Contemporary Segmented Turning presents the works of some of the leading artists, in what I believe is the most difficult and exacting technique in the field of woodturning.  Each of these artists aremasters of the technique and have chosen segmented turning to create their own individual visions.

No longer confined to early American Indian bowl shapes and patterns, although there are still some wonderful pieces still being done in this style, as you will see in this exhibition, segmented turners are breaking out of what we traditional thought of segmented turning and are creating unique forms with dramatic patterns that truly cross over into pure art.

In traditional woodturning, a single piece of wood is used and it is the size, grain orientation and colors of the wood that often determine the direction the artist will take.  With segmented turning, the artist is only limited by their imagination, skill and above all patience.

I hope you enjoy this year’s overview of segmented turning today and I look forward to presenting Piece by Piece as an annual del Mano exhibition.   Ray Leier
