Artist’s Statement

I spend my days as a professor in Computing Science at Simon Fraser University. When I leave the halls of the academe, I generally head straight for my studio in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada where I devise new ways to torment wood.

My involvement in woodworking began with a desire to make experimental musical instruments. It’s the same old story - I needed turned parts for an automated programmable xylophone, so I bought a lathe. After that little adventure, I was hooked and the lathe became my primary tool for shaping wood. I was suddenly a woodturner. After a few years of making functional items, I turned to the artistic side of woodturning.

My work generally begins on the lathe and is often enhanced with pyrography, coloring, and carving. My recent work uses turning techniques that produce shapes that do not appear to be turned.
