ABOUT THE ARTIST
Cheryl Tall's coil built sculptures range from ten inches to six feet in height and are painted with impressionistic hand with glazes and terra sigillatas and kiln fired. Tall makes her own glazes and terra sigillata,a special polychrome slip also used by Native American and early Greek potters. The highly textured finger marks, resembling shingles, are a hallmark of her sculpture. The artist's imagery focuses on the relationships between people and their subconscious, reinterpreted in an iconic way. Emotions and relationships are played out in human forms and merge with architecture. Eyes become windows, hair becomes a row of shingles and a head merges with animal or architectural shapes. The work often portrays two or more figures in close proximity, symbolizing the universal relationships of romantic partnerships, siblings, friends and neighbors.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT
In this body of work, I am exploring issues of transformation, unity and duality. These archetypes can be used to explore modern life and provide an expansive canvas on which to pose my stories. These are stories about togetherness and apartness, created from the awareness that we are all, in one way or another, connected to oneanother.
