ARTIST'S STATEMENT

It seems to me that as an artist, one can get an 'idea' and work off of that idea for a lifetime. For those of us who work with materials in a spatial environment, the 'idea' is not an intellectual one, but a visual one. At this point my work is still about the same fun of arranging forms in space that I can get lost in, and it's about the refining of that work over time. In terms of imagery, some of the imagery I've let go of because the forms didn't hold my interest over time. But the work with 'flowers', I've never ceased to be excited by in terms of the building process. It's a sculptural process that still excites me. And the coloring part is like putting clothes on the piece, sort of making them all 'dressed up' with someplace to go!

It is also about the suppleness of clay (clay being in the realm of the physical, a physical entity). There is a perfect moment when you can play with the clay and stretch it, move it and see what shape comes out of all that alteration to the original thrown piece. The building process involved in my work, especially the flower pieces, has always felt like a game of 'Pick-up-Sticks,’ seeing monumental sculpture in very small forms. And now at the other end of my working career, I can say the above still holds true today.

My view is always concerned with a vignette, a short story, just a moment caught and I try not to worry about where it's going, or even if there's any meaning. I just feel lucky to have been able to get lost in what I do and have fun with it.
