ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I am interested in exploring the connection between humanist traditions of folklore while evolving contemporary forms of artistic expression. The emphasis is upon examining human involvement with the environment in a tangible yet grotesque manner. The pieces attempt to capture the spirit of interaction, reflecting and displaying the essence in an innately satisfying form. The art is intended to kindle a pleasing portrayal of universal message utilizing clay as a near-eternal medium.
Each piece is individually made and is one of a kind. The bodies of the vessels are thrown on the wheel and are made from "glacia" porcelain. The figurines are made by hand. The pieces are bisqued at ∆04. They are then hand painted and air brushed with underglazes and stains. Clear glaze is then applied and the piece is fired in a gas environment in oxidation to ∆10-∆11. Each firing may take up to 20 hours. Then rare decal patterns, 24K gold and lustres are applied and the piece is fired once more.
