ABOUT THE ARTIST

Lidija Tkalcevic was born in Croatia, where she received her education in economics.  In 1981, she moved to California, where her preoccupation with art flourished.  Her interest in the human body was present from the beginning.  She tries to capture funny and sad moments of everyday life in her sculptures.  Common people and the little things that make up our lives can be found in Tkalcevic's work.  She finds her own way, expressing in a somewhat stylized and simplified form, which is influenced by the "naïve" painters of her country.  Form and texture are very important to her.  Her colors are achieved with clay stains and oxides, and the firing is done at cone seven.
