ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My imagery is constructed through a series of painted layers interweaving figures, marks, text and designs. Cartoon like figures run, jump, flip and sprint across the surface mimicking incidents from real life.   The characters juggle balls, fish and objects unimaginable with a sense of humor and imagination. The figures appear as a fusion of primitive art, prehistoric markings, cave paintings and petroglyphs all important resources that inform my work. Travel plays a significant role in providing me with inspiration, ideas, experience and enjoyment. From exotic Borneo in 1968 to ancient Venice in 2008 each destination is an opportunity to expand my visual vocabulary.

My materials are gathered longleaf pine needles that are bound with raffia into sensuous coiled vessels. Row upon row of repetitive stitching sculpts the basket surface of uneven rows into rounded oval forms. Applying acrylic paint to the finely crafted surface allows me a freedom of design which I was unable to achieve with embroidery. Painting directly on the stitched surface my figures come to life furiously propelling arms and legs in an effort to move across the basket surface. Each work is an opportunity to paint lush colors with layers of wash, dots, marks and text that overlay and intertwine the figure in a series of complex designs. My work combines contemporary artistic expression on the outside while the inside reveals the finely coiled craftsmanship of natural materials.
