ARTIST'S STATEMENT
The idea of container with its interior space suggests to me the passions and turmoil within that are only alluded to on the exterior visible skin. Light shinning on and through the irregular surface lets my pictorial narratives have a more personal ‘telling” of the story. By using unmatched glass beads I can choose each individual bead for its particular variation of color, shape, size and texture to make the “fabric” that is my canvas. Using a technique of netted beading gives my hands a controlled pleasure as I construct the vessel and a sense of “building “ textured walls for each piece.
ABOUT THE WORK
Treasured Memories: Never Shared
Delicate, fragile and faded…memories found in old trunks and boxes… hidden from view in closets and attics. When found, the meaning and importance testified to only in the reality of the keeping. Who did they belong to? When were they used? Why have they been saved? Without the story, they are only objects … objects that elicit questions.
Questions that beg answers…the most disquieting … those that are unanswerable. “Who can tell me now?” “Why didn’t you tell me?” “What was its importance to you?”
Left without its significance, is it discarded? Is it entrusted to a present generation to be used? Does it return to its hiding place, to become an enigmatic curiosity for another discoverer? Tell me. Tell me. Tell me.
But mostly, "Why aren’t you here to tell me now?" The unanswerable.
