ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Fragments of thoughts, memories and interpretations of physical objects converge to influence and realize my work. Experiences of traveling, transitions observed in the landscape, images suggested in poetry, and random voyages of the imagination provide creative inspiration. I am intrigured by the mystique and secrets of interior spaces. Their introspective character evokes images held in memory or encountered in reality. In my work, the exterior of form often contracts with the interior, resulting in a dichotomy of spirit.

I enjoy the physical process of manipulating metal. Hammering techniques including angle-raising, forging, sinking and forming are combined with fabrication strategies to transform flat sheet metal into three-dimensional forms. Rich surface colorations are achieved by layering oxides, pigments, dyes and waxes to the metal surfaces. Copper is usually my metal of choice because of its inherent malleability and ability to patina most successfully.
