ABOUT THE ARTIST
David Sengel gained an appreciation for wood at an early age in his father’s amateur woodworking shop. After studying music at Davidson College in North Carolina, Sengel went to work as a piano technician. In 1973, he opened his own business repairing and restoring pianos. During that time, he began to work more with wood and purchased a lathe out of a catalog. Though he was primarily self-taught, classes at the Arrowmont School with instructors including Del Stubbs and David Ellsworth, gave him the technical skills and desire to pursue lathe-oriented woodworking full-time. He feels fortunate to have been making his living as a full-time turner since 1987.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Having become a part time farmer these past few years, I have come back to a point of valuing the more functional aspects of beauty, be it with vegetables or art. The platter form offers the multiple opportunities of function, beauty and expression.
