ABOUT THE ARTIST
"From the very first time I discovered woodturning, I have loved it and haven't stopped since." This is the way Eli Avisera, wood artist, craftsman and wood art teacher describes the first magical moments of his working with wood.
He studied at The Professional High School of Wood Art in Jerusalem, and in 1988 opened the Wood Craft Center in Israel, teaching woodcarving, woodturning and furniture building.
Avisera started producing his own woodturning tools to answer his artistic needs. The owner of Hamlet Craft Tools of Sheffield, England was so impressed by the tools that today the company produces a full line of signature woodturning tools designed by Eli Avisera that carry his name.
His style has changed over the years. Out of youthful enthusiasm, his work was full of elements. However today, with the maturity of a seasoned and skilled wood artist, he focuses on the artistic and visual aspects of his art. His work combines clear and bright lines which are hormonious with nature. At present, Avisera is in an intensive period of artistic development. Most of his time is dedicated to woodturning in all its forms: teaching, demonstrating, and doing craft and design work.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT
In 1995, I learned the special design of the candlesticks at a workshop by the master woodturner Rude Osolnik. I then adapted the design to my own techniques.
The box and inlay designs are my original designs and techniques that I have been doing for many years. The box has a dual purpose as a Chanukah gift for children: it is both a housing for the dreidel and a container inwhich the child may receive Chanukah gelt (money).
