ARTIST’S STATEMENT
When I first started turning, I was fascinated by the Pacific Madrone (Arbutus Menzieii); its smooth chestnut to yellow-green bark, its leathery green leaf, its red berries against winter snow. The Madrone has a muscularity not unlike that of a fine thoroughbred horse. And to keep and highlight that movement, that torque, I turn the wood wet and after it reaches its final form, I hand color each vessel with a water-based dye. My intent is to not just add color, but to find a balance of color and form.
The difficulty and enjoyment in this approach is that when the color and torque of the wood come together, in just the right way, luck gets clearly defined.
