ABOUT THE ARTIST
Stephen Hatcher showed an early aptitude for realistic drawing at a very early age. Upon finishing high school he was earning an income painting murals in homes. Though art has held a lifetime interest for Stephen, several years at the University of Washington lead to degrees in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. During his 20-year career as an electronics entrepreneur, Stephen developed numerous cutting-edge devices for the wireless communications industry. Retiring from this field in 2000, Stephen developed his interests in wood turning and stone carving. Merging these techniques led to his unique style of artwork.
ARTIST”S STATEMENT
For several decades I was an avid mountaineer in the Pacific Northwest. Passing through gnarled trees on an approach, finding holds in crystalline rock, and keeping an eye on the constantly changing weather were awe-inspiring experiences. In 1998, seeking relief from the pressures of my career as an electronics entrepreneur, I first tried woodturning and stone carving. These disparate materials were soon merged as I developed techniques to create imagery from the mountaineering experiences in woodturned objects by inlaying mineral crystals. An interest in Japanese art and Buddhist poetry influenced the designs as my technical mastery developed. I strive to conceive and create pieces that reach out and connect with others - works that stir the viewer’s memory and retrieve a moment in time. I have been told these works possess a soul of their own.
