ARTIST’S STATEMENT
There is an age old unspoken language between man and tree. The gravity of these hollow wooden forms is deceptive, lighter in weight than they appear. The visual and tactile surface of this receptive material is graphic food for the inquisitive participant. Abstract hand markings that are evidence of inviting intent, respect and resolve; speak quietly and await the curiosity of an open-minded passerby.
Born in 1946, Los Angeles, California. Attended Art Center College of Design, Los Angeles, California, where I studied graphic design. My creative background includes more than twenty years in the professional graphic arts field: art directing and designing record album packaging, advertising and marketing materials.
For the past eleven years I have worked primarily in wood. With a lifelong love of drawing, design, and working with my hands, the transition from 2-dimensional design to 3-dimensional form was natural. The vessels are first lathe turned in the woodshop, then the surface patterns are applied freehand in my art studio using pyrography (woodburning) and low-relief engraving enhanced with paint.
