ABOUT THE ARTIST

I was born in Brockton Mass., one of five siblings. My interest in building started in New Holland, South Carolina when I helped my uncle Millage build a wooden enclosure for our garden. But, it was many many years before I could get the chance to express myself by building furniture. I taught myself to build furniture by reading everything I could get on the subject. It was a long journey of discovery and excitement working with the many woods of the world. I still build and repair furniture but, I find I am drawn to creating one of a kind vases and bowls. I try to “think out of the box” in order to create something unique. It is the excitement of designing a creation that no one has ever seen. Presently, I am designing and building exotic wood vessels, which use their natural color in a fashion in which Tiffany used for his glass creations.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Discovering the many complex properties of wood from around the world, has been a magnetic force for me. Wood arising from the dirt of the Earth, and by using Fire and Water and a little creativity, I strive to create unique vessels. By using steam, I realized I could forge wood into the graceful forms I needed in order to achieve the desired effect. Wood has finally achieved the status of art work in the field of vessels which was dominated by clay and glass for many centuries. It is a mystery why it took so long for the earths greatest resource, wood, to be considered a art form by vessel artists.
